You may notice a line on your electric bill labeled "Demand". This information is included for educational purposes only. WIPCO is not billing members based on demand; we are simply providing this data to help you better understand how and when you use electricity.
So, what exactly is demand?
Demand measures the highest amount of electricity you use at one time during the billing period. While energy usage (measured in kilowatt-hours, or kWh) reflects how much electricity you use overall, demand (measured in kilowatts, or kW) focuses on how much electricity is being used simultaneously at any given moment.
For example:
Running a single appliance, like a coffee maker, creates a small demand.
Running multiple large appliances at once, such as a dryer, oven, and electric heater, creates a much higher demand. Even if it's only for a short period of time.
That brief period of peak usage is what demand captures.
Why is demand shown on your bill?
Understanding demand can help you make more informed decisions about your electricity use. By spreading out energy-intensive activities, like doing laundry, cooking, or running large equipment, you can lower your peak demand.
While demand is not currently used to calculate your bill, it plays an important role in how electric systems operate and how power costs are managed across the industry.
Our goal is simple: transparency and education. By seeing your demand alongside your energy usage, you gain a clearer picture of your electric habits and how small changes can make a difference.
