The Mission of Western Iowa Power Cooperative is to provide its Members and Customers valued utility services that enhance their Quality of Life.

Western Iowa Power Cooperative was incorporated on April 1, 1997 after the consolidation of South Crawford Rural Electric Cooperative and Monona County Rural Electric Cooperative. Both RECs began providing electrical service to rural areas in 1936. WIPCO provides service in 9 area counties and covers 2,000 square miles of service area in west central Iowa. WIPCO owns, operates and maintains an extensive distribution system consisting of overhead line and underground line.
Western Iowa Power Cooperative is a true Cooperative. It is a non-profit electric utility owned by the Members it serves and was established to provide reliable electric service at the lowest possible cost. WIPCO returns all profits from operations of the electric cooperative to the Members of the Cooperative over time. Of course, it is impossible to establish rates whereby the revenue and expenses are always equal. There must be a way to disburse margins that are leftover after the deductions of all expenses. Since you are one of the Member-Consumers of the Cooperative, part of the margins are yours. The portion of the margin that you (or any Member) receives is determined by the amount of business done with the Cooperative each year. The more business, the larger your share of the margin.

Each year you will be notified concerning your share of the Cooperative's margin for the preceding year. The notification will indicate the amount of margins you earned during that year. Between the time you are notified of your capital credits and the time it is paid, the money is used by your Cooperative to maintain and improve the electrical system to insure adequate and dependable electric service. The time between capital credit notification and payment will vary depending greatly on how much it costs to keep your electric system in the best possible operating condition.

The Members control the Cooperative; it is people working together toward a common goal. The Board of Directors is elected by the Members and meet monthly to set policies and review the operations of the Cooperative. WIPCO receives its power from Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative (NIPCO,) a generation and transmission cooperative located in Le Mars, Iowa. A reliable electrical supplier, in NIPCO and Basin Electric, and experienced employees have allowed Western Iowa Power Cooperative to remain stable and financially sound. Local ownership, local control, non-profit operation and cooperative - your Cooperative is something special - a unique way of doing business.
